Poultry cage systems for Zambian layer farms

Zambia is landlocked and a long way from any port, so freight planning matters more here than almost anywhere we ship. The upside is a commercial poultry sector that is unusually well organised for the region.

Three routes in, and freight is the real decision

Dar es Salaam is the usual entry point, with roughly 2,000 km of road onward to Lusaka. Beira in Mozambique is the alternative for the south, and Walvis Bay occasionally makes sense despite the distance when the eastern corridors are congested.

Sea transit is 30–40 days to Dar, then a week or more inland depending on the transporter and the border at Nakonde or Chirundu. Total door-to-door of eight to ten weeks is a realistic plan.

Because inland haulage is such a large share of landed cost here, container efficiency matters. We plan the packing so you are not paying to ship air — on a large order that can be the difference of a whole container.

Documents

Zambia requires conformity documentation for imported goods. Raise it at quotation stage and we arrange the inspection at our factory before shipment rather than leaving it to be resolved at the border.

What works in Zambia

Larger, better-capitalised farms

Zambian commercial poultry is comparatively consolidated. Enquiries at 30,000–50,000 birds are normal here, where they would be exceptional elsewhere in the region.

Freight rewards going big at once

With inland haulage this expensive, phasing an order into small shipments is costly. Where the plan is two houses, it is usually cheaper to ship both sets together and build in sequence.

Cool season is genuinely cool

Lusaka and the Copperbelt get cold nights from June to August. Ventilation needs to shut down as well as open up — side inlets and a proper controller matter more than raw fan capacity.

Talk to someone who has shipped here before

The same team handles every Zambia order, so they know the corridor, the paperwork and which questions to ask before a container is booked rather than after.

Which route do you recommend?

Dar es Salaam for most Lusaka and Copperbelt destinations. Beira is worth pricing if you are in the south. Your transporter's current rates decide it more than distance does.

Can you ship two houses in one order?

Yes, and it usually saves money. We mark and pack each house separately so you can build in sequence without sorting through mixed bundles.

Do you send engineers to Zambia?

Yes, and for installations at 35,000 birds and above we recommend it. Buyer covers flights, visa, accommodation and daily allowance.
